Review: Althea Korea Petal Velvet Sunaway Sunscreen

As we move into the new year, a new year resolution I would like to make and try to keep to would be to use more sunscreen. You would think that for someone like me, I wear sunscreen daily, but nope, I don't. That is, until I discovered Althea's Petal Velvet Sunaway.

I must admit, I had my misgivings when I got this product, but I thought to put it aside and tried it on. This sunscreen claims to be ultra-lightweight and invisible, formulated with a moisturising formula that plumps the skin and Damask rose extracts, ensuring that your complexion stays fresh and hydrated throughout the day.

Its key ingredients are damask rose extract - deeply hydrating and soothes irritations, leaving the skin feeling healthy, and geranium oil - gives the skin a radiant boost and heals acne. It is also SPF 50+ and PA++++, so your skin is protected all day. As part of the Petal Velvet line, it also contains micro-powder particles that give you a smooth, petal-like complexion.

Like the other Petal Velvet lines, the product comes in a minimalistic looking pink box, with the familiar lines across the side, like what you can see from the Petal Velvet powder box. Unfortunately I have thrown it away, so I can't take a photo to show you, but what's important is how it looks like on the inside, right?

I recently went to Bali for a short getaway before 2018 ended, and I brought the Petal Velvet Sunaway with me. The bottle itself is also reminiscent of the Petal Velvet line, which is very minimalistic with the name of the product in clear font on the front, and Korean descriptions on the back. I would say one of the drawbacks of the product is that it is too minimalistic, and they decided to just have Korean on the bottle, instead of making it dual language, presumably because they wanted to keep the bottle clean and sleek. 🤷‍♂️

There is a warning on the bottle that you must shake well before use, and you really have to shake it to mix it up nicely. I guess because it comes formulated with all these special ingredients, that the product separates when left on a countertop for too long, hence to ensure you get the best of the product, you really need to give it a good shake. I didn't shake the product enough once, and it came out very watery. So please, shake it with all you've got.

What do I think about the product?

The product itself is white in colour and does smell very pleasant, with a hint of rose. The texture itself is very light when applied onto my face, and it doesn't leave any streakiness or white cast, as was my experience with a lot of other sunscreens, which is one of the reasons I don't like to apply sunscreen.

It applies very easily and doesn't leave an oily residue like most sunscreens. In fact, after application, my face felt very velvety, much like how it felt when I used the Petal Velvet Powder. Two thumbs up for a velvet finish.

Throughout the day, I was out walking in the Bali heat, and I felt that my face was noticeably less oily, which was awesome. The product controlled the sebum on my skin, and I think that is due to the micro powder system which absorbs sebum and excess oil. Combined with the hyaluronic acid, it ensures the skin is kept hydrated throughout the day.

One other ingredient I want to highlight is the damask rose which has a natural nanomolecular composition that is rich in vitamins to penetrate deep into the skin, soothing sensitivities and strengthening it for a radiant glow.

My last thoughts on this product:
The main reasons I don't like to wear sunscreen is because it leaves my skin with a white cast, and my face feels very oily after application. Hence I am always worried my pores get congested and my skin loses its moisture.

However, this Petal Velvet Sunaway doesn't leave any white cast on my skin, and instead of oily residue, it leaves my face with a velvety finish. Coupled with the hyaluronic acid, I don't have to worry that my skin is dehydrated.

I guess the only drawback is that you have to shake the bottle really well to ensure the products mix well first before using it, but that's something I can live with.

Have you tried it? Try it out, and let me know what you think!
