The Hibiscus Rosa Sinensis, also known as the ‘Brilliant Red’ was chosen for its five petals, symbolising the nation’s Rukun Negara (principles of nationhood). Its red colour symbolises the courage and unity of its people, with its many varieties, colour, shapes and sizes reflecting the different races, religion and multi-cultural background of the people who live in peace and harmony in Malaysia. The Hibiscus Rosa Sinensis is also locally known as the Bunga Raya.
The Hibiscus flower is not only the national flower of Malaysia, it is also the national flower of South Korea. Seems we have more in common than we thought! Instead of the Rosa Sinensis, South Korea's Hibiscus is of the Syriacus subspecies, which are pink mauve single flowers with a dark magenta eye. Known as the Rose of Sharon, the flower’s symbolic significance stems from the Korean word mugung, meaning immortality (Mugunghwa in Korean). According to records, the Koreans have treasured the Hibiscus Syriacus since ancient times and have written about the love for the flower in their national anthem.
Upon carefully studying the ecology of the Hibiscus flower alongside intense observation of the flower blooming in its natural habitat, Mamonde has discovered that the Hibiscus flower contains moisturising properties and its extract offers flawless hydration to the skin.
