Review: Miss Hana Water Proof Gel Eyeliner

Did you know, eyeliner was first used in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia as a dark black line around the eyes? As early as 10,000 BC, Egyptians wore various cosmetics not only for aesthetics but to protect the skin from the desert sun. For the superstitious, research has also speculated that eyeliner was worn to protect the wearer from the evil eye.The characteristic of having heavily lined eyes has been frequently depicted in Egyptian art.

In the 1920s, when Tutankhamun's tomb was discovered, it introduced the use of eyeliner to the Western world. Fast forward a few hundred years, and here we are, wearing eyeliner for aesthetic value, and to pretty up our looks.

Thanks to Natta Cosme, I got a chance to review a type of pencil gel liner, which is the Miss Hana Water Proof Gel Eyeliner. Now, when we talk about gel liners, it usually comes in a pot, where you will have to brush it on, much like the Maybelline Lasting Drama Gel Liner.

I was quite surprised that the Miss Hana Gel Liner comes in a pencil form, and I was wondering if it would do the trick, so this is as good a time as any to see if gel liners in pencil form would perform better or otherwise :)

For part of our review, we were sent to different types of the Miss Hana Gel Eyeliner, which is the Night Black, and also the Choco Brown

According to their website, the Miss Hana Water Proof Eyeliner Pen claims to have:

1. Extreme Colour - performing better than the other eyeliner pencils in the market, it delivers evenly coloured lines and achieves excellent colour to create three-dimensional deep eyes.

2. Gelatinous texture - improves your stroke, and moderate gel hardness for smooth gliding on of the liner.

3. Extremely waterproof - it has long time anti-sweat, anti-tears and oil formula to maintain a whole day without smudges. You can even use it to draw cat eyes and it can stay on for a long time.

Ingredient list

At first glance it was hard to differentiate the two different colours cos it comes in the same packaging with tinted covers so it's hard to see the liner inside. But now I've gotten accustomed to it, and I find it very easy for me to pick out which colour I want to use.

The packaging itself looks really nice :) I'll admit, I'm a bit of a sucker for pretty things, and this has certainly gotten my attention. Furthermore, when I held the pencil, it fit very comfortably in my hands.

Using the black liner

When I first used it, I loved how it glides on very smoothly. As it's gel type, the colour payoff was very good. I didn't have to draw the lines multiple times, once was enough as it was very black. So I guess I can check claim number 1 as valid :D

Moving on to claim number 2,  it does have a gelatinous texture that is soft that you do not have to apply too much pressure to line your eyes. This is a very big plus point for me because my eye area is very delicate and I do not want to pull the skin unnecessarily. So I apply the liner with just a small amount of pressure, and I get very defined eyes.

Only one line, and the colour payoff is good

So, claim number 3 is that it is long lasting and water proof. Let's put that to the test :D

The Smudgeproof test:
As with all liners, you need to let it dry before trying to rub it off, so that's exactly what I did. My first thought after I tried to rub the liner off was that it has really good staying power! The colour didn't even budge, and even none of the colour came off, however little.

So, long lasting or not? You tell me :)

The waterproof test:
I held it under running water, and it didn't run at all. Then after that, I rubbed it while it was still wet, and still the colour didn't budge. It only came off a little after I rubbed a little harder, but personally I feel that this is a highly unlikely situation, considering I wouldn't even rub my own eyes that hard.

So yes, I would deduce that it's water proof.

Eyes lined with brown liner :)

Now, no matter how you swatch it and perform the test, it's not fully conclusive until you've actually used it for a whole day. So, I tried it on, and here's what I think:

I love that I can use it to draw cat eyes and the ends are precise as well. The brown colour is not too light, neither is it too dark. The colour is just nice to give my eyes a soft look that I can use for everyday.

For the smudgeproof  test, I would say that a little bit of it did come off at the end of the day, but most of it stayed on that you could still clearly see that I was wearing eyeliner, and it didn't smudge to the bottom part of my eyes. So I would say under these circumstances, it actually performed quite well.

For the water proof test, it didn't come off easily when I splashed it with running water. It only fully came off when I used make up remover. So, as a conclusion, I would say it's about 80% water proof, and at the same time, it's great because I don't have to rub hard with make up remover just to remove it.

For more defined eyes, you can use both these colours. Just use black for the top lid, and brown to lightly line the bottom. Trust me, you will get eyes that stop people in their tracks :D

So, in a nutshell:

Waterproof: It's pretty water proof, only a little bit of it came off when I splashed it with water at the end of a long day.

Smudgeproof: It's quite smudgeproof. Itdidn't smudge to the lower lid of my eyes after a long day.

Staying power: At the end of the day, it doesn't disappear. The liner still stays on and is still quite noticeable.

Verdict: 7.5/10

Repurchase: Yes

Additional Comments: Personally, this is one of the better pencil liners that I've tried in my lifetime (and I have tried a lot). It stays on my eyes smudgeproof the whole day, but comes off easily with water based make up remover. These two babies are now a staple in my everyday make up bag :D

Price: RM34.90, but you can get it from Natta Cosme for only RM24.90! Check it out here: http://www.nattacosme.com/Miss-Hana-Water-Proof-Gel-Eyeliner
