London, The Summer Musical @ Sunway Lagoon

Once again, Sunway Lagoon has come up with another Musical to entertain us this June! This West-End production will be on from 1st June 2012 to 8th July 2012!

Thanks to bb, I got to catch the Gala premiere of this Musical together with him :D I quite like how they made the tickets look, kinda like boarding passes, in line with the theme of the Musical.

Synopsis: London, the Summer Musical tells the story of flight attendants with 48 hours to explore London in a carefree summer atmosphere. It will feature hit songs from the 70s onwards, including those from Mamma Mia, Footloose, Glee, The Lion King, Smash, Priscilla Queen of the Desert and James Bond movies.

The Gala Premiere was hosted by JD and Dilly, the radio DJs from Mix.fm's Breakfast Show.  After which there were some speeches, and then it's time for the Musical to begin!
The beginning of the musical with the main casts and ensemble performing Flying the Flag, which was the theme song of the musical.

I have to say, the casts do have quite powerful voices, but their speaking voices were a little annoying. It was too high pitch for my liking, and I didn't know whether or not it was real.

I thought some of the song choices were good, but some didn't really make sense. Some didn't tie in with the mood that was created, and coming out to sing One Thing by One Direction seemed more like a gimmick to me to get the crowd hyped up. There was little to no connection at all with the script.

Oh and their performance night was themed "Hollywood" which they brought out many famous Hollywood movies such as ET (above), Harry Potter (below), Phantom of the Opera, Titanic (My Heart will Go On), Moulin Rouge (Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend), amongst others.

My favourite song of the night was Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and it reminded me of those awesome movies I saw with cabaret dancers like Chicago, Moulin Rouge, and Burlesque (to a certain extent). For me, I have always been a girl who loves dance, so I was quite appreciative of their originality. The dance moves for this particular number was good :)

This was a funny scene as they were singing "It's Raining Men" and the ensemble cast came out dancing with Magnum umbrellas :p

Typically, there's the love-story scene, where Penny meets her long lost lover in a state of circumstance.

Here they are with him trying to win her back, and her trying to resist his charms. The story was quite predictable, as there was mention of the dude in the beginning of the Musical. I sorta knew she would bump into him in London.

Verdict: This is a good musical to attend, purely for the music, and not storyline. Sorry to say, as I am someone who values plot as much as anyone else, this musical lacks any sort of coherent comprehensible plot. Also, this being the fourth musical that Sunway  Lagoon has brought from the West End, I would expect the dance moves to be a little different. But sadly that wasn't the case. I see the same moves from Peter Pan, Magical Musicals, and Aladdin.

However, that being said, the songs are still good, and they do manage to get the crowd going. I could see a few senior citizens dancing and swaying to the music when they were doing the ABBA medley :D

So if you're a music fan and absolutely loves musicals, be sure to check this out!

That is expected from Sunway. Alladin was like that too. The songs were good, but some just have no relevance to the story at all. And the storyline are just lacking everywhere.

I'm a plot person too. I hate the feeling of dissatisfaction after watching something due to incomplete plots. Aladdin just felt super rushed. It is just unsatisfying.

Yup agreed :) I think cos they needed to keep to the show's time limit, so they rushed everything at the end. Aladdin for me was a little better, cos I knew the plot already. However, they paid too much attention to detail in the beginning until they ran out of time at the end :/
